Getting to Mombasa Island
From the airport the drive runs through Changamwe and along the A109 over the Makupa Causeway onto the island. Distance is short, but the causeway and Moi Avenue slow down at rush hour, so we allow extra time for morning and evening arrivals.

Where visitors stay
City hotels cluster around Moi Avenue, Nkrumah Road and the Kizingo residential area on the south of the island. Old Town has a handful of boutique guesthouses inside the historic lanes.
Things to do in Mombasa Island
Fort Jesus: Sixteenth-century Portuguese fort and UNESCO World Heritage Site at the edge of Old Town.
Old Town: Narrow Swahili lanes, carved doors and the old harbour; best explored on foot with a guide.
Mombasa Tusks: The Moi Avenue arches, first put up in 1952 and still the city’s best-known photo stop.
Mama Ngina Waterfront: Promenade of more than 2 km facing the entrance to Kilindini Harbour, busy with street food in the evening.
Local tip
For evening flights out of Moi International, leave the island earlier than the distance suggests: the causeway and Changamwe back up between about 16:30 and 19:00 on weekdays.

Should I take the Likoni ferry or the Dongo Kundu bypass to Diani from the island?
From the island the ferry is the shorter route on paper, but queues vary widely. We check conditions on the day and choose between the ferry and driving round via the bypass.
