The drive from Moi International to Mombasa Island
From the airport the drive runs through Changamwe and along the A109 over the Makupa Causeway onto the island. Distance is short, but the causeway and Moi Avenue slow down at rush hour, so we allow extra time for morning and evening arrivals.
On the way you pass Changamwe and Makupa Causeway. Weekday rush hours around Mombasa (roughly 07:00–09:00 and 16:30–19:00) can add 20–30 minutes.
Where we drop off in Mombasa Island
City hotels cluster around Moi Avenue, Nkrumah Road and the Kizingo residential area on the south of the island. Old Town has a handful of boutique guesthouses inside the historic lanes.
Regular drop-offs include City centre (Moi Avenue), Old Town, Tudor, Ganjoni, Kizingo and Mama Ngina Drive. Once you have settled in, Fort Jesus and Old Town are close by.
Good to know before you land
For evening flights out of Moi International, leave the island earlier than the distance suggests: the causeway and Changamwe back up between about 16:30 and 19:00 on weekdays.
Uber and Bolt work at the airport, but on a 10 km trip drivers sometimes decline, or ask to switch to cash once they see the luggage. A pre-booked car removes that uncertainty after a long flight.
