From Miritini station to Watamu
From Miritini the route heads back through Changamwe towards the city before turning north. From Mombasa the transfer runs the full North Coast road through Kilifi and past the Arabuko Sokoke forest, then turns off at the Gede junction for the last few kilometres into Watamu.
On the way you pass Mtwapa Creek Bridge, Kilifi Bridge, Arabuko Sokoke and Gede.
Skip the crowd at the station exit
Taxi drivers crowd the Miritini exit when a train comes in. Your driver holds a name board, helps with luggage and follows the train’s real arrival time, so a late train costs you nothing.
Staying in Watamu
Hotels and villas line Watamu’s bays: Turtle Bay runs south from the headland towards the mouth of Mida Creek, Blue Bay lies to the north, and Jacaranda Bay is a quieter 10 km beach further north towards Malindi. Some lodges sit on the edge of Mida Creek.

Watamu Marine National Park: One of Africa’s oldest marine parks (1968): coral gardens and turtles, reached by glass-bottom boat.
Malindi Airport is about 20 km, or 20–30 minutes, from Watamu. If a domestic flight works for you, it saves around two hours in the car compared with flying into Mombasa.

Should I fly into Mombasa or Malindi for Watamu?
Malindi Airport (MYD) is much closer, about 20 km or 20–30 minutes by road. Mombasa has more international flights but the transfer is about 2–2.5 hours. We cover both.
What if my train arrives late?
